MORGAN STATE STUDENTS TAKE ACTION!
April 22, 2013
Todays Be Your Own Boss Event focused on the substance use and its impairments. There was a small crown gathered in the canteen around the table where students could pledge not to drink and drive or drive distracted. Alcohol lowers your brains ability to control behaviors and in turn impairs your motor skills like driving. I took the pledge, because in the past two years at Morgan State University there has been more than one incident where a student was involved in a drunken driving accidents that resulted in serious injury or death. A student at the event, Brian Stephens said “ It’s a good idea to start and raise awareness on campus because I see people party , get in they cars and go. You never know what the person on the road had to drink so you have to be aware and alert so you can avoid accidents.”
Also at the event there was an impaired sex game, at the table you were to put on either the blindfold and be spun or the drunk goggles and walk to the table and properly put a condom on the penis. This game did not attract a large crowd like the pledge table but it message still important. The volunteers passed out condoms and explained the importance of having safe sex. If you have sex while drunk you will be less likely to use protection properly and can result in STD’s or an unwanted pregnancy. Morgan State is really stepping up to the plate with recognizing the problems directly related to the students.
